How to choose portable power stations

List the devices you want to run, their running watts and startup requirements. Choose continuous output first, then enough battery energy for the time you need. Compare carrying weight, charging options and the standalone package before adding panels.

Our shop links earn us nothing today: we have not joined an affiliate programme yet. When that changes, it still will not change which products we recommend. How this will work

01Start with the load

Add the running watts of devices you want to use together and check their startup needs. Compare against rated continuous output. Treat surge and special boost modes separately; confirm compatibility with the device manufacturer rather than assuming a headline watt figure covers everything.

02Size energy for time

As a starting estimate, watts multiplied by hours gives watt-hours. Allow extra capacity for conversion losses, idle consumption and varying loads. A refrigerator cycles on and off, so its label wattage alone will not give a dependable overnight runtime.

03Compare what you can carry

A power station is only portable if its weight works for you. Check the complete unit weight and handle arrangement. Larger nominal capacity may be less useful if you cannot move the unit from storage to where it is needed.

04Check charging and panels

Solar panels are usually a separate purchase. Match connector, voltage and current limits to the station; panel wattage alone does not establish compatibility. Weather changes output. AC recharge claims also depend on charging mode, temperature and available input power.

05Choose a standalone unit or a system

Confirm the exact generation, included cables and whether expansion batteries are supported. A panel bundle, refurbished unit, rental or subscription is a different offer from a new standalone station. Compare the total package before buying.

06Use the intended connection

These comparisons concern plug-in appliances using the station’s outlets. A whole-home connection needs a compatible professionally installed arrangement; never backfeed a wall socket. Follow the manufacturer’s operating, ventilation and temperature instructions. A listed changeover time alone does not establish suitability for critical equipment.
