Buying guide
How to choose an espresso machine
Start with your coffee routine: the drinks you make, the preparation you enjoy and the space available. Then compare the machine, grinder and accessories as a complete setup.
Our shop links earn us nothing today: we have not joined an affiliate programme yet. When that changes, it still will not change which products we recommend. How this will work
01Type
Manual or semi-automatic (you control the shot), all-in-one with a built-in grinder, fully automatic bean-to-cup, or capsule. Effort, price and control trade off across these.
02Grinder
If you use whole beans, include a suitable grinder in the budget. Compare adjustment options and ease of use; a built-in grinder saves a separate purchase but gives less flexibility when upgrading.
03Heating and heat-up time
Some machines are ready in seconds; others need several minutes, or longer, to reach a stable temperature. Machines with two boilers or a heat exchanger can brew and steam at the same time.
04Pressure and temperature control
Do not choose by the advertised pump pressure alone. Compare temperature controls, pre-infusion options and published results for the kind of coffee you drink.
05Milk
A manual steam wand gives the most control for latte art but takes practice; automatic wands and frothers are easier and more consistent.
06Portafilter size
Check accessory compatibility for the exact machine and portafilter. Diameter alone does not guarantee that baskets, handles or other accessories fit.
07Size, water tank and maintenance
Check the height under your cabinets, whether the tank fills from the front or top, and the descaling and cleaning routine the maker recommends.
