How to choose an air fryer

An air fryer is a small convection oven with a fan close to the food. The choice comes down to how much you cook at once, how much counter space you can give up, and how much cleaning you will tolerate.

Our shop links earn us nothing today: we have not joined an affiliate programme yet. When that changes, it still will not change which products we recommend. How this will work

01Capacity and shape

Choose for your usual portions and usable basket area. The same quoted capacity can have different shapes; check whether your food fits in a single layer and whether you will need batches.

02Basket type

A single basket keeps the routine simple. Independent dual baskets can handle two foods at different settings; check whether they can finish together. Oven-style models use trays. Compare actual dimensions and prices.

03Cleaning

Check that the basket and crisper plate are dishwasher-safe, and what the non-stick coating is made of if that matters to you.

04Power and preheat

Check the rated power and the maker’s preheating instructions. Compare published cooking results instead of assuming a higher wattage means better food.

05Noise

Fan noise varies noticeably between models, which matters in an open-plan kitchen.

06Controls

Dial or touchscreen. Presets are convenient but not essential; a clear temperature and time control is.

07Footprint

Measure the counter and space needed to open drawers or doors. Follow the manufacturer’s required ventilation clearances.
